Have you received estimates that vary widely in price for your commercial chain link fence project? The answer might be the material being quoted in those estimates.
Chain link fence material (commonly called chain link fabric), comes in different gauges or thicknesses. The lower the gauge, the thicker the material. The standard chain link fabric that Hartsell Brothers Fence Company installs is 9-gauge. Some fence contractors use 11-gauge or higher as their standard material. Big difference here! 9-gauge chain link fabric is at least 20% thicker and heavier than 11 gauge, offering better security and resistance to bending and sagging.
Using 9-gauge material also requires larger diameter posts, therefore enhancing the durability and security of the area to be fenced in. Make sure the posts being quoted are minimum 2.5” for line posts and 3” for terminal posts. Also, posts should be spaced ten feet or less apart. A smaller diameter post will not be satisfactory with 9-gauge chain link fabric. Likewise, posts spaced more than 10 feet apart will produce an unsatisfactory result.
Finally, and very few look at this, but make sure tension wire (also called coil wire) and / or a solid bottom rail is installed where the fence meets the ground. Tension wire, and especially bottom rail, make a more durable installation and is aesthetically pleasing. For added strength, consider a mid-rail, especially for chain link fences that are 8’ or more in height.
